I did it! I jumped on the bandwagon that is Fourth Wing. This book has been ALL OVER my social media for months. I don't usually go with the trends until it's too late and the hype has faded. A good example of this in my life is Harry Potter. My best friends in middle school were obsessed with the books and eventually the movies. I was not. I just assumed I wouldn't like a movie about kids and magic. The only witch I was a fan of was Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Skip to 2017 and my best friend gifted me the first book. I enjoyed it and decided to watch the movie with my husband. I watched all 7 movies in a weekend and wished I had been a part of the hype along with everyone else. I'm glad I jumped onto this one. It's been an escape from the real world in the best way.
Fourth Wing follows Violet Sorrengail, a 20 year old girl whose mother has basically sentenced her to death when she sends her off to compete to become a dragon rider at Basgiath War College. The competition is brutal and did I mention Violet is the General's daughter? That alone makes her several enemies. Enter Xaden Riorson, the mysterious and ruthless wingleader who has made it no secret that he wants Violet dead. But she's smart and resourceful. She works hard to survive day by day, much to the dismay of several peers and to the surprise of her best friend, Dain. Oh Dain... He wants to keep her safe and alive and get her out of the rider's quadrant but something inside Violet says this is where she belongs. In a world where she doesn't know who she can trust or believe in, she learns to trust and believe in herself. There's of course, romance as this is a Romantasy and it is SO GOOD! There's so much more I want to write, but I'd like to avoid major spoilers, so I'll just say that if you're looking for something that has action from the start, amazing banter and unexpected turns, you should pick this book up. It's a mix of Divergent, Hunger Games and a dash of Game of Thrones all in one!
My plan was to finish Fourth Wing in 2024 and then read it's sequel, Iron Flame. But here I am, having finished Fourth Wing a few days ago and already 20% into Iron Flame. I am not a person who reads fantasy books. Not because of anything bad, I just tend to lean more towards the romance and thriller books. I wasn't sure what to expect with this one and to be honest, I've enjoyed these way more than I though I would! As soon as I finished the first book I searched for author interviews, fan podcasts and am a bit obsessed at the moment. I love that this isn't the author's first, second or even tenth book and she's found this huge success! I am invested and recommending it to whoever will listen. This book makes you want to keep turning the page well after you say that you're going to read "just one more chapter".
Have you read Fourth Wing yet? Thoughts? Can't wait to see this one on the big screen!
